How to Calculate Flight Time With This Flight Time Calculator

Flight time depends mainly on distance and cruising speed. A longer route takes longer, and a faster cruising speed shortens the trip, just as with driving.

Flight time = Distance ÷ Average cruising speed

For example, 1,500 miles at 500 mph gives 1,500 ÷ 500 = 3 hours. In metric units, 3,000 kilometres at 800 km/h gives 3,000 ÷ 800 = 3.75 hours, which is 3 hours 45 minutes. This flight time calculator converts the distance as well: 1 mile equals 1.609 kilometres.

How to Use the Flight Time Calculator

Type the flight distance into the first box and choose miles or kilometres. Then type the average cruising speed in the same unit system — mph for miles, or km/h for kilometres. A typical jet cruises at about 500 mph (800 km/h).

Tap Calculate Flight Time to see the flying time in hours and minutes. Remember that this is flying time only. It does not include check-in, boarding, taxiing, or time on the ground, so allow extra time for the whole journey.

Flight Time Calculator Examples

Example 1 — 1,500 miles at 500 mph. Flight time = 1,500 ÷ 500 = 3 hours 0 minutes.

Example 2 — 3,000 kilometres at 800 km/h. Flight time = 3,000 ÷ 800 = 3.75 hours = 3 hours 45 minutes.

Example 3 — 450 miles at 450 mph. Flight time = 450 ÷ 450 = 1 hour 0 minutes.

These flight time calculator examples show the same simple pattern: double the distance and the time doubles, while a higher cruising speed cuts the time. Wind, route, and air traffic can change a real flight, so treat the result as an estimate for planning.

Flight Time Calculator Tips

Use the great-circle distance between airports, not the road distance, because flights do not follow roads. Airport and airline websites usually publish the scheduled flight time, which includes taxiing and a buffer for delays.

If you are crossing time zones, the clock time on arrival is not the flight time. Add or subtract the time-zone difference separately. For general information on how flight times are planned, see the Federal Aviation Administration website. To compare flying with driving, try the speed calculator and the toll calculator.

Flight Time Calculator FAQ

What does a flight time calculator do? A flight time calculator divides flight distance by average cruising speed to estimate flying time in hours and minutes.

Does it include check-in and boarding? No. It estimates flying time only. Add time for check-in, security, boarding, and baggage claim for the full journey.

What cruising speed should I use? Use about 500 mph (800 km/h) for a typical jet, or the speed published for your aircraft type if you know it.

Why does my real flight take longer? Real flights include taxiing, climb, descent, wind, routing, and air traffic, all of which can add time beyond the cruising estimate.

Can I use kilometres? Yes. Choose kilometres and enter the speed in km/h, and the flight time calculator will convert the distance to miles as well.

Should I use road distance or great-circle distance? Use the great-circle distance between airports, not the road distance, because flights do not follow roads.

Sources and Method

This flight time calculator uses the method shown on this page: Flight time = Distance ÷ Average cruising speed. Enter the flight distance and the average cruising speed in matching units, in miles and mph or kilometres and km/h. The result is flying time only, in hours and minutes, and does not include check-in, boarding, taxiing, or time on the ground. Last updated: October 28, 2026.
