Percentage Increase Calculator Formula
First find the change, then divide it by the original value and multiply by 100.
Percentage increase = ((New value − Original value) ÷ Original value) × 100
For example, from 50 to 75: (75 − 50) ÷ 50 × 100 = 50%. A positive answer means growth, and a negative answer means a fall. A negative result is still useful: it tells you the size of the decrease in percent.
If the original value is 0, the result is undefined, because division by zero has no answer. The calculator will say so plainly instead of showing a misleading number.
How to Use the Percentage Increase Calculator
Type the original value into the first box and the new value into the second box. Both can be whole numbers or decimals, and they can be prices, counts, scores, or any other numbers.
Tap Calculate Percentage Increase to see the result. The tool shows the signed percentage and, in plain words, whether it is an increase or a decrease.
Percentage Increase Calculator Examples
Example 1 — From 50 to 75: (75 − 50) ÷ 50 × 100 = 50% increase.
Example 2 — From 200 to 250: (250 − 200) ÷ 200 × 100 = 25% increase.
Example 3 — From 120 to 90: (90 − 120) ÷ 120 × 100 = −25%, a 25% decrease.
Percentage Increase Calculator Tips
Do not confuse a percentage increase with percentage points. If a rate rises from 10% to 15%, that is a 5 percentage point rise, but a 50% increase relative to the original 10%.
Always check which value is the original. Using the new value as the base gives a different answer, and it is the most common mistake with this calculation.

Percentage Increase Calculator FAQ
What is a percentage increase? It is the change between two values, shown as a percent of the original value, so growth of different sizes can be compared fairly.
How is percentage increase different from percentage change? Percentage change is the general term and can be positive or negative. Percentage increase describes the positive case, when the new value is larger than the original value.
Can the original value be zero? No. A percentage increase from 0 is undefined, because you cannot divide by zero, so the tool explains that instead of giving a number.
What does a negative result mean? It means the new value is smaller than the original. For example, −25% means a 25% decrease.
Can I use decimals? Yes. The calculator accepts whole numbers and decimals, such as 49.99 and 59.99.
What is the difference from a discount? A discount works from an original price to a lower sale price. Use the Discount Calculator for sale prices.
