No sign-up required. This tool works in your browser, so the numbers you enter are not stored or sent to us. It converts finite decimals exactly; repeating decimals such as 0.333... are best entered to as many places as you need, because a computer cannot store an endless decimal exactly.
Decimal to Fraction Calculator Formula
The method has three steps. First, write the decimal as a fraction over a power of 10. Second, find the greatest common divisor of the numerator and denominator. Third, divide both by that divisor to get the fraction in its lowest terms.
0.75 = 75 ÷ 100
GCD of 75 and 100 = 25
75 ÷ 25 = 3 and 100 ÷ 25 = 4, so 0.75 = 3/4
For a value greater than 1, the same method gives an improper fraction, which is then split into a whole number and a remainder. For example, 1.25 = 125 ÷ 100 = 5/4 = 1 1/4.
How to Use the Decimal to Fraction Calculator
Type a decimal such as 0.75, 1.25, or 0.2 into the box. Tap Convert to Fraction. The result shows the simplified fraction, and a mixed number when the decimal is greater than 1. Use the simplified fraction for homework, recipes, measurements, and woodworking, where fractions are easier to read on a ruler or a measuring cup than a long decimal.
If you enter a whole number, such as 2, the result is simply 2. If you enter a negative decimal, the result keeps the minus sign. Keep the number of decimal places reasonable — up to about 6 places works well — because very long decimals can give very large denominators.
Decimal to Fraction Calculator Examples
Example 1 — Convert 0.75 to a fraction. 0.75 = 75/100. Divide both by 25 to get 3/4.
Example 2 — Convert 1.25 to a fraction. 1.25 = 125/100. Divide both by 25 to get 5/4, which is the mixed number 1 1/4.
Example 3 — Convert 0.2 to a fraction. 0.2 = 2/10. Divide both by 2 to get 1/5.
Other useful conversions: 0.5 = 1/2, 0.25 = 1/4, 0.125 = 1/8, and 0.375 = 3/8. These are the fractions most often needed in cooking and in imperial measurements.
Decimal to Fraction Calculator Tips
Count the decimal places first: one place means tenths, two places means hundredths, and three places means thousandths. For background on fractions, see Wikipedia's article on fractions. Always simplify at the end — an unsimplified fraction such as 75/100 is correct but not finished. If a measurement is in inches, a simplified fraction is usually the form a ruler or tape measure uses.
