Exponent Calculator Formula
An exponent tells you how many times to multiply a base by itself. In the expression base to the power of exponent, the base is the number being multiplied, and the exponent is how many times it appears as a factor.
Result = base ^ exponent
For example, 2 to the power of 3 means 2 × 2 × 2 = 8. A negative exponent means the reciprocal: 10 to the power of −2 is 1 ÷ (10 × 10) = 0.01. Any non-zero number to the power of 0 is 1. The special case 0 to the power of 0 is undefined, and this exponent calculator says so instead of giving a misleading answer.
How to Use the Exponent Calculator
Type the base into the first box and the exponent into the second box, then tap Calculate Exponent. The exponent calculator accepts whole numbers, decimals, and negative exponents, so you can check powers, roots written as fractional exponents, and scientific notation. For example, 9 to the power of 0.5 is the square root of 9, which is 3.
Watch out for very large results: exponents grow quickly, so a small change in the exponent can make a huge difference. If the result is extremely large, the exponent calculator may show it in scientific notation, such as 1e+21, which means 1 followed by 21 zeros.
Exponent Calculator Examples
Example 1 — 2 to the power of 10. 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 = 1,024.
Example 2 — 5 to the power of 3. 5 × 5 × 5 = 125.
Example 3 — 10 to the power of −2. 1 ÷ (10 × 10) = 0.01.
Example 4 — 0 to the power of 0. This exponent calculator returns “undefined”, because mathematicians do not agree on a single value for this case in general use.
Exponent Calculator Tips
Remember the common rules: anything to the power of 1 is itself, anything to the power of 0 is 1 (except 0 itself), and a negative exponent flips the number to its reciprocal. Powers of 10 are the basis of scientific notation, which is used in science and engineering for very large and very small numbers. For background on the math, see Wikipedia's article on exponentiation. If you need growth over years rather than a single power, the compound interest calculator applies a power repeatedly to a starting amount.
Exponent Calculator FAQ
What does an exponent calculator do? An exponent calculator raises a base number to a given exponent, that is, it multiplies the base by itself the number of times shown by the exponent.
What is 2 to the power of 3? 2 to the power of 3 is 2 × 2 × 2 = 8.
What is 0 to the power of 0? 0 to the power of 0 is undefined in general use, and this exponent calculator reports it as undefined rather than guessing a value.
Can the exponent be negative? Yes. A negative exponent gives the reciprocal of the positive power, so 2 to the power of −3 is 1 ÷ 8 = 0.125.
Can the exponent be a decimal? Yes. A fractional exponent such as 0.5 gives a root, so 9 to the power of 0.5 is 3.
Can the base be negative? Yes. With a whole-number exponent, the sign follows the exponent: an odd exponent keeps the result negative, as in (−2) to the power of 3 = −8, while an even exponent makes it positive, as in (−2) to the power of 2 = 4.
