How to Calculate Your Final Grade: Final Grade Calculator Formula

Your overall grade is a weighted average of your current grade and your final exam score. The current grade counts for the part of the course that is not the final, and the final counts for its weight. To find the final score you need, work backwards from the overall grade you want. This final grade calculator uses exactly that method, so you can check its answer by hand.

Required final score = (Desired grade − Current grade × (1 − Final weight)) ÷ Final weight

For example, with a current grade of 80%, a desired grade of 85%, and a final worth 40%, the required score is (85 − 80 × 0.60) ÷ 0.40 = (85 − 48) ÷ 0.40 = 92.50%. If the answer is above 100%, the desired overall grade cannot be reached on the final alone, even with a perfect score. If the answer is below 0%, you have already secured the desired grade, even with a zero on the final, although you should still check your course rules.

How to Use the Final Grade Calculator

Type your current grade as a percentage into the first box, the overall grade you want into the second box, and the final exam weight as a percentage into the third box — for a final worth 40%, type 40, not 0.40. Tap Calculate Required Final Score to see the score you need on the final. Check your syllabus for the exact weight, because a small change in weight changes the required score a lot.

Remember that this final grade calculator assumes your current grade is the weighted average of all work so far, and that the final is the only work left. If you still have assignments or tests, include them in your current grade or adjust the weight to cover all remaining work. It also assumes grades are on a 0 to 100 scale; if your course uses letters or points, convert them to percentages first.

Final Grade Calculator Examples

Example 1 — Current 80%, desired 85%, final worth 40%. Required score = (85 − 80 × 0.60) ÷ 0.40 = 92.50%.

Example 2 — Current 90%, desired 90%, final worth 25%. Required score = (90 − 90 × 0.75) ÷ 0.25 = 90.00%.

Example 3 — Current 75%, desired 80%, final worth 20%. Required score = (80 − 75 × 0.80) ÷ 0.20 = 100.00%.

These final grade calculator examples show why weight matters: the same 5-point gap needs 92.50% when the final is worth 40%, but 100% when it is worth only 20%. A heavier final gives you more room to change your overall grade, in both directions.

Final Grade Calculator Tips

Work out the required score early, so you know how much study time the final deserves, and set a realistic target: aiming for a score above 100% is a sign to adjust your overall goal or to check for extra credit. If your required score is very high, focus on the topics with the most marks first. For general background on grading, see the Wikipedia guide to academic grading. Final Grade Calculator FAQ

What does a final grade calculator do? A final grade calculator works out the score you need on a final exam to reach a chosen overall grade, from your current grade and the final exam weight.

How do I calculate the required final score by hand? Use (Desired grade − Current grade × (1 − Final weight)) ÷ Final weight, with the weight as a decimal. For example, (85 − 80 × 0.60) ÷ 0.40 = 92.50%.

What if the required score is over 100%? Then the desired overall grade is not possible on the final alone, even with a perfect score. Lower your target, or check whether extra credit or other work can raise your current grade.

What if the required score is below 0%? Then you have already secured the desired grade, even with a zero on the final. Check your course rules, because some courses still require you to take the final.

Does it work for letter grades? Convert letter grades to percentages first, using your school scale, then use the final grade calculator on the percentage scale.

What if I still have assignments left besides the final? Then do not treat the final as the only remaining work. Include those assignments in your current grade, or adjust the weight to cover all remaining work, so the required final score reflects everything still to be graded.
