Semester Grade Calculator

No sign-up required. This tool works in your browser, so the scores you enter are not stored or sent to us. Letter grades follow the common US scale below, but your school may use a different scale — always check your course guide.

Semester Grade Calculator Formula

The weighted grade multiplies each score by its weight, adds those results together, and divides by the total weight.

Semester grade = (Score 1 × Weight 1 + Score 2 × Weight 2 + Score 3 × Weight 3 + Score 4 × Weight 4) ÷ Total weight

Weights are usually percentages that add to 100. If your weights add to a different total, this tool still gives a fair result by dividing by the total weight you entered, and it tells you so in the result. Letter grades on the common US scale are: A from 90%, B from 80%, C from 70%, D from 60%, and F below 60%.

How to Use the Semester Grade Calculator

Enter each score as a percentage from 0 to 100, and enter the weight for that score as a percentage. For example, if homework counts for 20% of the course, enter 20 as its weight. If a score does not apply, set its weight to 0 and it will not affect the result.

Tap Calculate Semester Grade to see your overall percentage and letter grade. Change any score or weight and tap again to see the new result at once. That makes it easy to see what score you need on the next test to reach your target grade.

Semester Grade Calculator Examples

Example 1 — The default scores. Scores of 85, 90, 78 and 92 with weights of 20%, 30%, 25% and 25% give (85 × 20 + 90 × 30 + 78 × 25 + 92 × 25) ÷ 100 = 8,650 ÷ 100 = 86.50%, a B grade.

Example 2 — Perfect scores. Scores of 100, 100, 100 and 100 with any weights give 100%, an A grade, because every score is the same.

Example 3 — Two equal parts. Scores of 70 and 80 with weights of 50% and 50% give (70 × 50 + 80 × 50) ÷ 100 = 75%, a C grade. The result sits halfway between the two scores because the weights are equal.

Semester Grade Calculator Tips

Always check whether your weights add to 100. If they add to less, part of the course is missing, and if they add to more, one part is counted twice. Read your course guide, because some courses drop the lowest score or count the final exam twice.

Use the tool to plan, not just to check. Try a higher score for your next test and see how much your overall grade moves. A test with a large weight moves the total far more than a small quiz, so spend your study time where it counts most.

Semester Grade Calculator FAQ

What is a semester grade calculator? It is a tool that combines several scores, each with its own weight, into one overall percentage and letter grade for a course.

How do I work out what score I need on my next test to reach a target semester grade? Try a higher score for that test, keeping its weight the same, and see how the overall percentage moves. A test with a larger weight moves the total more than a small quiz, so focus your study time where the weight is highest.

What if my weights do not add to 100? The tool divides by the total weight you entered, so you still get a fair weighted result, and the result notes the total weight. For a final course grade, though, your weights should add to 100.

Can I leave a score out? Yes. Set its weight to 0 and it will not affect the result.

What letter grade scale is used? The common US scale: A from 90%, B from 80%, C from 70%, D from 60%, and F below 60%. Some schools use plus and minus grades or different cut-offs, so check your course guide.

Does this replace my school’s official grade? No. It is an estimate from the scores and weights you enter. Your teacher or school system gives the official grade.

Sources and Method

This calculator uses the weighted-average method shown in the formula section and the common US letter-grade scale (A from 90%, B from 80%, C from 70%, D from 60%, and F below 60%). Results are estimates from the scores and weights entered, not official school grades. Last updated: October 28, 2026.
