How to Calculate Tip: Tip Calculator Formula
Learning how to calculate tip is simple, because a tip is just a percentage of the bill. If you know the bill and the percentage you want to leave, you can find the tip in one multiplication, and then add it to the bill to get the total. This tip calculator uses the same steps every time, so you can check its answer by hand in a few seconds.
Tip = Bill × (Tip percentage ÷ 100) and Total = Bill + Tip
For a split bill, divide both the tip and the total by the number of people. For example, a $50 bill at 20% gives a tip of $50 × 0.20 = $10, and a total of $60. Split between 2 people, that is $30 each, including $5 of tip each. The tip calculator also works if you tip on the pre-tax bill: enter the pre-tax amount as the bill, and it will apply the percentage to that amount. In the United States, tipping 15% to 20% is common in restaurants; in the United Kingdom and Canada, customs differ, so check the local norm and whether a service charge is already included before you add a tip.
How to Use the Tip Calculator
Type the bill amount into the first box, the tip percentage into the second box — for 20%, type 20, not 0.20 — and the number of people into the third box. If you are paying alone, leave the number of people as 1. Tap Calculate Tip to see the tip amount, the total bill, and the amount per person, including the tip per person. Try a different percentage to see how the total changes before you decide.
Remember to check whether tax or a service charge is already on the bill. If a service charge is included, you may not need to add a full tip on top of it. This tip calculator does not add tax, because tax rules differ by place, so enter the amount you want to tip on. It gives an estimate for planning and paying, not a rule about what you must leave.
Tip Calculator Examples
Example 1 — $50 bill at 20%, split between 2 people. Tip = $50 × 0.20 = $10. Total = $60. Per person = $30, including $5 of tip each.
Example 2 — $80 bill at 15%, paid by 1 person. Tip = $80 × 0.15 = $12. Total = $92. Per person = $92.
Example 3 — $120 bill at 18%, split between 4 people. Tip = $120 × 0.18 = $21.60. Total = $141.60. Per person = $35.40, including $5.40 of tip each.
These tip calculator examples show why the percentage matters: on the same $80 bill, a 15% tip is $12 and a 20% tip is $16, a difference of $4 in the total. The tipping calculator also makes splitting fair, because each person pays the same share of the bill and the same share of the tip, unless you agree otherwise.
Tip Calculator Tips
Decide the percentage before you look at the total, so the size of the bill does not change your standard. A common approach is 15% for adequate service, 18% to 20% for good service, and more for outstanding service, but local custom and your budget matter too. Always check the bill for a service charge first, and if you are splitting, agree whether the tip is split equally or paid by each person on what they ordered. If you want to check a price reduction first, the discount calculator can help, and the percentage increase calculator can show a change as a percentage.
Tip Calculator FAQ
What does a tip calculator do? A tip calculator works out the tip on a bill from the bill amount and the tip percentage you choose, and then shows the total bill and, if you split it, the amount per person.
How do I calculate tip by hand? Multiply the bill by the tip percentage as a decimal. For example, 20% of $50 is $50 × 0.20 = $10. Add the tip to the bill for the total. This online tip calculator does that arithmetic for you.
What is a good tip percentage? It depends on where you are and the service. In the United States, 15% to 20% is common in restaurants. In the United Kingdom, 10% to 15% is common when no service charge is added, and in Canada 15% to 20% is common. Check local custom first.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount? Many people tip on the pre-tax bill. This tip calculator tips on whatever bill amount you enter, so enter the pre-tax amount if that is what you want to tip on.
How do I split a tip between people? Divide the tip and the total by the number of people. Enter the number of people in the tip calculator, and it shows the per-person total and the tip per person.
How should I round the tip when splitting?/strong> Round each person's share up to the next whole dollar. The small extra covers the tip and keeps the split even./p> Try the Discount Calculator to find a sale price, the Percentage Increase Calculator to measure a change, the Salary to Hourly Calculator to turn an annual salary into an hourly rate, and the Hourly to Salary Calculator for the reverse calculation.
