Countdown Timer Formula
A countdown timer is a simple subtraction. It takes the target date and time, subtracts the current date and time, and splits what is left into days, hours, minutes and seconds.
Remaining time = Target date and time − Current date and time
Days = Remaining seconds ÷ 86,400, rounded down. Hours = the rest ÷ 3,600, rounded down. Minutes = the rest ÷ 60, rounded down. Seconds = what is left. The display updates every second, so the seconds count down in real time. If the target date and time has already passed, the remaining time is zero or less, and the display shows Time's up at 00 days, 00:00:00.
How to Use the Countdown Timer
Type a short name for your event, such as a holiday, an exam, a wedding, or a product launch. Pick the target date and time with the date and time picker. Tap Start Countdown, and the timer starts ticking at once.
To count down a short period, such as a study session or a cooking time, pick a target a few minutes ahead. To start a new countdown, change the event name or date and tap Start Countdown again. The old countdown stops and the new one begins.
Countdown Timer Examples
Example 1 — New Year. If today is 1 December 2026 at midnight and the target is 1 January 2027 at midnight, the timer shows 31 days, 00:00:00 remaining. December has 31 days, so the wait is exactly one month.
Example 2 — An exam in two and a half hours. If it is now 9:00 am and the exam starts at 11:30 am the same day, it shows 0 days, 02:30:00 remaining. That is 2 hours and 30 minutes.
Example 3 — A past target. If the target date is yesterday and you start the timer today, the remaining time is already gone, so it shows Time's up at 00 days, 00:00:00. It never shows a negative countdown.
Countdown Timer Tips
Check the time zone before a big event. The timer uses your device's local time, so a target set for midnight in one time zone may be a different hour somewhere else. For travel or online events, agree the time zone with everyone first.
Keep the page open for a live countdown, because the timer runs in your browser and stops if you close the tab. For a very long wait, such as a wedding a year away, the days figure is the most useful part, and the hours, minutes and seconds will follow it.
For a short wait, watch the seconds to judge the exact moment. You can also check other countdown tools, such as timeanddate.com's countdown pages, if you want a second view of a public holiday.
Countdown Timer FAQ
What is a countdown timer? A countdown timer shows how much time is left until a future date and time, in days, hours, minutes and seconds, updating every second.
How do I start a new countdown after one finishes? To start a new countdown, change the event name or date and tap Start Countdown again. The old countdown stops and the new one begins.
What happens when the countdown reaches zero? It shows Time's up at 00 days, 00:00:00 and stops ticking. It does not go negative.
Does it work for a past date? Yes, in the sense that it tells you the date has passed. A past target shows Time's up at 00 days, 00:00:00 at once.
Does the timer keep running if I close the page? No. It runs in your browser, so it stops when the tab is closed. Reopen the page, tap Start Countdown again, and it will show the correct time left from that moment.
Which time zone does it use? It uses the time on your own device, so the target is read in your local time. If you are counting down to an event in another time zone, convert the event time to your local time first.
