How to Calculate CGPA With This CGPA Calculator
CGPA stands for cumulative grade point average. It combines all your courses so far, weighting each course by its credits, into one average on your institution’s scale.
CGPA = Total grade points ÷ Total credits
To get total grade points, multiply each course’s grade value by its credits, then add those products together. For example, 180 total grade points divided by 50 credits gives 180 ÷ 50 = 3.60 on a 4.0 scale. The same division on a 10.0 scale would be a different kind of result, which is why the cgpa calculator asks you to select the scale first.
How to Use the CGPA Calculator
First, select your CGPA scale: 4.0, 5.0, or 10.0. Use the scale your university or college actually uses, and do not convert between scales unless your institution tells you how.
Then type your total grade points into the first box and your total credits into the second box. Tap Calculate CGPA to see your CGPA on the selected scale. If the result is above the scale, the cgpa calculator will warn you to check your numbers, because a CGPA cannot exceed its scale.
CGPA Calculator Examples
Example 1 — 180 grade points, 50 credits, 4.0 scale. CGPA = 180 ÷ 50 = 3.60 on the 4.0 scale.
Example 2 — 425 grade points, 50 credits, 10.0 scale. CGPA = 425 ÷ 50 = 8.50 on the 10.0 scale.
Example 3 — 210 grade points, 50 credits, 5.0 scale. CGPA = 210 ÷ 50 = 4.20 on the 5.0 scale.
These cgpa calculator examples use the same total credits but different scales, which is why the numbers look so different. A CGPA of 3.60, 8.50, and 4.20 can each be a strong result — but only on its own scale, so always state the scale with the CGPA.
CGPA Calculator Tips
Keep a running total of grade points and credits as you finish each term, so you do not have to rebuild them at graduation. If a course is repeated, check your institution’s rule, because some schools replace the old grade and others average the attempts.
Do not turn a CGPA into a percentage with a generic formula, because institutions convert differently. Ask your institution for its official conversion if you need one. For background on how grade point averages work, see Wikipedia’s article on grade point averages. For a single-term result, the semester grade calculator may be more useful, and for a single test, use the test score calculator.
CGPA Calculator FAQ
What does a cgpa calculator do? A cgpa calculator divides total grade points by total credits to give your cumulative grade point average on a chosen scale.
What is the difference between CGPA and GPA? GPA usually covers one term, while CGPA is cumulative and covers all terms so far. This cgpa calculator is for the cumulative result.
Why must I select a scale? Because 3.60 on a 4.0 scale, 4.20 on a 5.0 scale, and 8.50 on a 10.0 scale mean different things. The cgpa calculator never guesses your scale, so you must select it.
How do I find total grade points? For each course, multiply its grade value by its credits, then add all the products together. Enter that total and your total credits here.
Can CGPA be above the scale? No. If your result is above the selected scale, check your grade points, credits, or scale selection.
How do I handle a repeated course in my CGPA? Check your institution’s rule first, because some schools replace the old grade and others average the attempts. Then add the grade points and credits for the attempts exactly as your institution counts them before dividing by total credits.
