How to Calculate a Test Score With This Test Score Calculator
A test score is usually reported as a percentage. That percentage shows what share of the questions you answered correctly, whatever the total number of questions was.
Test score (%) = (Correct answers ÷ Total questions) × 100
For example, 45 correct out of 50 gives (45 ÷ 50) × 100 = 90%. This test score calculator also gives a common letter grade: 90% or more is A, 80–89% is B, 70–79% is C, 60–69% is D, and below 60% is F. Grade bands vary by school and by country, so always check your own institution’s scale.
How to Use the Test Score Calculator
Type the number of correct answers into the first box and the total number of questions into the second box. Tap Calculate Test Score to see the percentage and the letter grade.
If some questions are worth more than others, this simple test score calculator is not enough on its own. Add up the marks you earned and the total marks available instead, then enter those two numbers in the same boxes. The percentage will then be correct for a weighted test as well.
Test Score Calculator Examples
Example 1 — 45 correct out of 50. Score = (45 ÷ 50) × 100 = 90.0%. Grade: A.
Example 2 — 32 correct out of 40. Score = (32 ÷ 40) × 100 = 80.0%. Grade: B.
Example 3 — 17 correct out of 20. Score = (17 ÷ 20) × 100 = 85.0%. Grade: B.
These test score calculator examples show why the total matters: 32 out of 40 and 17 out of 20 are different raw scores, but both are strong results once converted to a percentage. Use the percentage, not the raw count, to compare tests of different lengths.
Test Score Calculator Tips
Do not confuse a test score with a final grade. A test score covers one test, while a final grade combines tests, homework, and exams over a term, often with different weights. For that combined result, use the final grade calculator or the semester grade calculator.
If you are close to a grade boundary, check whether your teacher rounds scores or drops the lowest test, because either rule can change the result. For general advice on preparing for exams, see the BBC Bitesize exam revision guide. Remember that one test score does not define your learning; use it to find the topics to practise next.
Test Score Calculator FAQ
What does a test score calculator do? A test score calculator turns correct answers and total questions into a percentage score and a letter grade.
Is this the same as a final grade calculator? No. A test score calculator covers a single test or exam, while a final grade calculator combines several weighted parts of a course.
How do I calculate a test score by hand? Divide correct answers by total questions, then multiply by 100. For example, 45 ÷ 50 × 100 = 90%.
What if questions have different marks? Enter total marks earned and total marks available instead of question counts. The percentage formula works the same way.
Are the letter grades the same everywhere? No. The A to F bands used here are common in the United States, but schools in the United Kingdom, Canada, and elsewhere may use different bands.
Why does the total number of questions matter? Because the percentage, not the raw count, is what compares tests of different lengths. For example, 32 out of 40 gives 80.0%, and 17 out of 20 gives 85.0%, even though the raw counts are different./p>

Sources and Method
This test score calculator uses the method shown on this page: Test score (%) = (Correct answers ÷ Total questions) × 100. Enter the number of correct answers and the total number of questions, or total marks earned and total marks available if questions have different marks. The result is a percentage score and a letter grade for a single test, not a final grade. Last updated: October 28, 2026.
